Set in the flashy discos and on the streets of New York City in the late 1970s, author Stephen Welles, who was raised in the Bronx and Manhattan, uses his own experiences to paint his central character and how he became a part of the disco explosion coming out of the U.S. Marines(1977) as a 21-year-old "street-club dancer." Welles says,"Disco Nights offers readers the chance to learn about or relive the great memories of the Disco Era through the story line, the songs, the artists, the musicians, the street dancers, and the DJ's who put the music out. Revolving around this story of our 1970s culture are landmark historical events that occurred in New York City - the1977 black out; Son of Sam; the Yankees return to glory, gay & women's rights, the summer where the Bronx was burning and more. I was looking for something different in reading and I stumbled upon "Disco Nights" by Stephen A. Welles. I'm glad I did! This book makes the Disco era come alive with its 70s disco music, colorful characters and interesting storyline. The Author opens up a door to the 70s as he takes you on a daily, musical journey through the New York City streets of yesteryear. The titles of Disco songs and even some early Rap music intertwine around this electrifying storyline. The Author played disc jockey, dancer and dance choreographer throughout the book. The way he describes the love stories and the dance contests surrounded by large crowds on the city streets and disco clubs in New York was pretty cool and exciting... I learned a lot about this 70s culture and how it was back in the day. Disco Nights is a book I would highly recommend to anyone!Product details

Disco Nights Stephen A Welles 9780978676049 Books Reviews
Anyone who lived through the "Disco Era" will enjoy this book. Welles takes us through the late '70s in NYC, when disco was king, and puts us back in time. His gift for making us remember the songs, the disc jockeys and the dancing makes this a must read for anyone who had an interest in this time period.
Well written and entertaining, this book takes us to a special time in a special way.
If you really want more and more disco because that's what you like the most, you really want this book!
I was expecting much more. It happens that the book is poorly written and full of cliches. To be avoided.
The Author certainly captures the 70s Disco Years from the Streets of New
York. Being a former Disco-Hustle contestant dancer who loved that time
period, I didn't know what to expect. As I read the book from the first page
to the last I felt myself so engrossed in this fun, fast paced, exciting
story that I didn't want the story to end. Mr. Welles a former Bronx-Marine
steps back in time to the Disco Years and pulls us in with him to tell his
story as we have visualizations of the prime years of Disco through his
eyes... He is a street hustle and early hip-hop dancer who choreography's
the dance scenes in the streets and in the clubs which has its own brand of
excitement. He also plays DJ by providing honorable mention of songs and
artists throughout the story line. In a nutshell, Mr. Welles gives us the
streets of 70s New York from the inside looking out. There is something in
this story for everyone; history, music, love stories, action, dancing
contests, gay rights, woman's liberation and so many other stories of the
Disco years. I loved the way the story ended. Thanks Mr. Welles for the walk
down memory lane...
As a dedicated club disco goer from 1975 through 1979, I'm always interested in reading historical material pertaining to discos of that period. While there are some well-researched books and articles to be found on the disco era, this is the first book that I have encountered which portrays that history from the point of view of a real participant, in the shape of Bronx-bred champion disco dancer Steve West -- the author’s surrogate.
‘Disco Nights’ describes the dance music zeitgeist for young twenty-somethings in 1977 through 1979 so graphically that the characters and locations jump to life off the page, whether or not you are familiar with New York and its boroughs.
The author has a fine ear for Bronx street lingo and is obviously intimately familiar with street culture and the disco scene, including competitive dancing.
Steve West’s story drives along at a good pace and keeps you guessing about its outcome right to the end.
As a bonus, woven into the story are references to more than 100 disco songs and tunes of the era by more than 80 artists, so if you were there you will get a great memory kick from that, and if you weren’t you can find the songs online and play them.
If you love disco, you’ll love this book!
Stephen Welles does a great job taking the reader back to the hey day of the N.Y.C. disco era (1977-79). The references to the tunes of the day play out like a literary sound track to accompany the story of Steve, a recently discharged Marine who draws on his street background and personal drive to find his niche in this world, expressed in his dancing. If you enjoyed the film "Saturday Night Fever", this book is a nice read!
